Oumar, who is now nine years old, was always healthy and cheerful. However, at the age of four, he began to fall ill. Oumar increasingly suffered from breathing problems and also had no appetite. His parents had Oumar examined at the military hospital in northern Cameroon. From there, they were referred to the cardiologist Dr Tsague in the capital Yaoundè. Dr Tsague diagnosed two heart valve defects, which has to be corrected surgically.

Oumar's parents are subsistence farmers and provide for their family of seven with their small farm. In order to have Oumar operated on, one of his parents has to travel with him to the capital.
