Like all young women, 29-year-old Idette had great plans for the future: she wanted to go to school, learn a trade, marry and have children. Eight years ago, however, Idette became very ill. She suffered from a developing coronary disease - severe coarctation. In 2008 already, the physicians of the Cardiac Centre Shisong recommended an operation, which Idette and her family were not able to afford. She was thus treated with medication. Later, as her condition worsened, Idette was referred by the St. Padre Pio Hospital Douala once again to the Cardiac Centre Shisong, where Dr. Jean-Claude Mbassa observed a deterioration of her condition and established a need for urgent surgery.

Idette lives with her mother and her six siblings in the outskirts of Douala.The family lives from retail trade and subsistence farming. It is absolutely impossible for a widow in charge of seven children to pay for this type of surgery. Idette's mother will nevertheless try to raise 500.000 FCFA (€ 763,35), i.e. an average income for a year.
